What does the "PH" in 17-7PH stainless steel mean? The "PH" after "17-7" in the alloy name indicates that this is a precipitation hardening alloy. The principle of precipitation hardening is that the metallographic organization of the solid solution changes when it is supercooled and aged. Precipitation hardening stainless steel provides a way to obtain very high strength for stainless steel materials with minimal dimensional deformation after fabrication with low temperature treatment.
